The ENCALS (European Network to Cure ALS) meeting 2023 was hosted in Barcelona, Spain from 12 – 14 July 2023 and featured keynote speeches, roundtable discussions, and presentations of cutting-edge research.

A highlight of ENCALS 2023 was a debate between UK MND RI Co-Director Professor Chris McDermott and Jinsy Andrews, MD. (Columbia University). The debate, titled “Early to Market or Definitive Evidence” focused on the types of evidence that should be acceptable for a drug to be made available for those with ALS.

The audience of delegates initially supported the ‘early to market’ position (argued by Dr Andrews). However, following considerable discussion, and taking into account views held by those with ALS, audience support switched to ‘definitive evidence’ (Prof McDermott), as obtained from Phase 3 randomised controlled trials. The consensus was that safety and effectiveness of drugs prescribed for those with ALS is paramount.
