About us

The UK Motor Neuron Disease Research Institute is a national network of MND centres working together to understand how and why MND happens, what might work as a treatment, and testing possible treatments in clinical trials. Researchers across the country are carrying out world-leading MND research in a coordinated way to accelerate the search for a cure.

Our vision

Our vision of the UK MND Research Institute is to accelerate drug discovery from laboratory science to phase 3 clinical trials, to make MND a curable condition.

  • Better understand the biological processes involved and underpinning MND – what is happening in MND?

  • Identify and develop new biomarkers that flag disease and enable us measure how disease progresses – are there tests we can do to diagnose and assess MND?
  • Develop new and better measurements to use in clinical trials, including improving the ALS Functional Rating Scale, a widely used but flawed outcome measure for trials in ALS – can we make trials quicker, easier and more accurate?
  • Develop and test new potential therapies- the only way to find a cure is to have lots of possible treatments to test.
  • Use the TiM platform to report symptoms directly to care teams across the UK- can we work with patients directly to understand MND?
  • Inform patients about research projects they can get involved with and encourage them to take part- keeping people informed about what we are doing is crucial.
  • Keep patients updated about the progress of research projects they are taking part in – giving back to the people contributing so generously.
  • Present research progress at conferences and in scientific publications, and promote through our consultancies with industry and academic partners- working with other scientists and partners to share knowledge as widely as possible.
How we are funded

How we are funded

The MND Collaborative Partnership, which ultimately became the institute, received funding from patient charities MND Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland, medical research charity LifeArc, Medical Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

Our Partners

Collaboration is central to the ethos of the institute.

We work with and collaborate with many partners, including Medicines Discovery Catapult, Health Data Research UK and Dementias Platform UK. We work with patient charities MND Association, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland, medical research charity LifeArc, Medical Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), and these organisations were co-funders of the MND Collaborative Partnership, which has ultimately become the institute.
