Demonstrate

We lead national trials that test whether potential treatments for MND actually work, how safe they are, and how quickly people can access them. Programmes like EXPERTS-ALS and TRICALS turn promising lab discoveries into rigorous evidence and bring trials to people across the UK, not just a handful of specialist centres.

Clinical Studies Group

The Clinical Studies Group brings together clinicians, researchers and patient representatives from centres across the country to plan and prioritise the UK’s MND trial portfolio. Meeting monthly since 2008, it decides which trials are worth running, then works to get them delivered, faster and in more places, than any single centre could manage alone.

EXPERTS-ALS

EXPERTS-ALS is a national platform that puts promising MND drugs through rapid early-stage testing, so the ones that work reach full-scale, later-phase trials faster, and the ones that don’t stop using up scarce trial places. Because each drug is tested against a shared group of participants rather than a fresh placebo arm, an answer comes about six times faster than a conventional trial.

TRICALS

TRICALS is a European partnership of MND researchers, industry and patients working to redesign how ALS clinical trials are run. Since its founding, the Institute has helped lead TRICALS, giving UK researchers and patients a direct route to a growing library of international trial data and expertise.

Intrathecal Delivery Network

The Intrathecal Delivery Network brings together MND centres already experienced in, or working towards, delivering drugs directly into spinal fluid. This is a method some of the newest MND treatments depend on. The network is building shared training and accreditation so more centres across the UK can offer it safely.
